Recent Power Outages in Roseburg Area Explained
Last Sunday, February 2 there were two outages in the Old Melrose Road area that affected Pacific Power customers. The first outage occurred in the morning from 9:19 to 10:23 a.m. “From what we’ve been able to determine, we think it was caused by some geese flying into a line, which caused some fuses to open up in the circuit,” Pacific Power Regional Business Manager Sam Carter said. “Throughout a distribution circuit we have fused points or protection points. Those fuses are installed to prevent wide spread outages.” 84 customers were without power in the morning outage. “We don’t know the extent of a flicker all along that circuit,” Carter said. “But that circuit crosses over into Hucrest so it’s possible they experienced some flickering there.” On that morning at the intersection of NW Harvey Avenue and NW Stewart Parkway the traffic signal was flashing red for some time. Another outage on Sunday associated with a car accident that hit a pole on Old Melrose Road created a longer outage at 5:09 p.m. 87 customers were without power until after midnight while the pole and equipment was being replaced. “It was on the same circuit as the earlier outage so the same customers could have experienced flickers as well.” Carter said. Other outages have been happening in the last three or four weeks due to another transformer failure in the Hucrest area along with an underground distribution line that failed and needed repair.
