DFPA Reminds the Public About Creating Defensible Space

(DFPA) Having defensible space is vital for your home to withstand the heat, flames, and embers created during a wildfire, and now is the perfect time to start preparing your home and property for the upcoming fire season! Defensible space is the area around a home or outbuilding where fuels and vegetation have been treated, cleared, or reduced to limit or slow the spread of a wildfire. You can create defensible space around your home or property by maintaining the grass, eliminate dead or dying vegetation, removing the underbrush (also known as ladder fuels), and by spacing and pruning trees. In addition, pine needles and leaves which have accumulated in gutters, on the roof, and other places around the home or outbuildings should also be removed. Many factors play into how much defensible space is needed around structures, including the amount and type of fuels/vegetation that surround your property and the slope and aspect where your home and outbuildings are located, but as a rule of thumb, DFPA recommends creating and maintaining 200’ of defensible space around structures located in wildland-urban interface areas. Remember, reducing the fuel reduces the risk! Start creating YOUR defensible space today!
