Local Fire Crews Quickly Put Out Three Fires Along I-5

11:33 PM · Jul 16, 2021

At approximately 11:20 AM Friday morning, crews from the Douglas Forest Protective Association, Canyonville – South Umpqua Rural Fire Department, and Tri-City Rural Fire Department responded to a grass fire that was reported near I-5 Milepost 102 southbound. While enroute to the incident, two additional fires were reported near exit 101 southbound and near milepost 100.5 southbound. A quick and aggressive initial attack by firefighters stopped the forward spread of all three fires at a combined total of about one acre of grass and brush. Firefighters remained on scene until 1:30 PM, mopping up hot spots and securing control lines. While the specific cause of the I-5 Milepost 102 Fires remains under investigation, a preliminary fire investigation has indicated that the cause of all three fires is most likely vehicle-related. Firefighters were assisted on scene by personnel and equipment from the Oregon Department of Transportation and the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians. Via DFPA
