Summer Reading Program for Children and Teens Launches June 1 in Roseburg

The Roseburg Public Library is set to kick off its Summer Reading Program on June 1, inviting children and teens into a summer of prizes, events, and activities to inspire a love of reading throughout the summer. ROSEBURG, Ore. (May 23, 2025) – The Roseburg Public Library is preparing to launch its annual Summer Reading Program for children and teens, with activities kicking off Sunday, June 1, and continuing through Saturday, August 23. Youth Services Librarian Aurora Ropp has been diligently preparing for the 12-week program, which includes 57 scheduled events, weekly craft kit distributions, numerous outreach efforts, and participation from guest presenters and volunteers. “At Roseburg Public Library, I do not present public children’s programs in May to give myself time to finish planning and preparing for the Summer Reading Program,” said Ropp. This year’s program encourages young readers to track their reading time using a log divided into three sections of seven hours each. Participants can be read to by a parent or caregiver, and no library card is required to join. Completing each section of the log earns readers a new book and a selection of prizes. Upon completing all 21 hours, participants will be entered into a drawing to win one of three grand prizes: a yearlong membership to the YMCA of Douglas County. The program will also continue its popular book review raffle. Children and teens may submit a written or illustrated review of a book they’ve read—or had read to them—for a chance to win prizes on display in the library’s lobby, including a gift card to DEFY trampoline park in Eugene, a 3Doodler 3D pen, a Squishmallow, and more. Four recurring weekly programs will be offered: Tuesdays at 1 p.m. (June 17–August 19): Activities and special presentations for pre-K through fifth grade at the library. Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. (June 4–August 20): Storytime at Stewart Park Pavilion. Thursdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. (June 19–August 21): Activities for sixth through 12th graders at the pavilion. Fridays at 10:30 a.m. (June 20–August 22): Activities for pre-K through fifth grade at Stewart Park Pavilion. Special guests throughout the summer will include Leapin’ Louie, Angel Ocasio, Red Yarn Puppets, and the Museum of Natural and Cultural History. The library will also host the fifth annual Harry Potter Day on Saturday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., featuring wand-making, trivia, transfiguration activities, and a visit from Wildlife Safari’s wizarding-related animals at 11 a.m. Children are encouraged to come in costume. A special quilt raffle for participants 18 and under will be held at noon, and the winner must be present to claim the prize. Other summer highlights include: StoryWalk® displays in parks across Roseburg from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, from June 2 through August 23, featuring a new bilingual story: Baby Goes to Market / Bebé Va al Mercado by Atinuke and illustrated by Angela Brooksbank. Grab-and-Go Craft Kits available on a first-come, first-served basis every Tuesday at 10 a.m. beginning June 3. Outreach at events like the Roseburg School District’s Lunchbox Express on Mondays throughout the summer. More details—including reading logs, book review forms, prize lists, and the full event schedule—can be found at www.roseburgpubliclibrary.org. The Summer Reading Program is made possible by the generous support of Mike and Barb Coen, the Douglas County Cultural Coalition, Friends of the Roseburg Public Library, and the State Library of Oregon.
