2019 Roseburg High School Boys Soccer Preview
The Roseburg High School boys soccer team is looking to get back to the playoffs in 2019 after narrowly missing the postseason last year. The Indians finished 6-7-1 overall, going 5-5 in the Southwest conference which was good for fourth place in league. If they had won one more game, they likely would have been in the playoffs. The team last made the playoffs in 2017. Jim Giraudo is entering his fourth year as head coach of the Indians with an overall record of 16-24-3. This year’s team features eight returning varsity players, five of which are returning starters. Varsity will have 17 players including two swinging from the JV team. Roseburg has six seniors, seven juniors, three sophomores and one freshman on it's varsity roster. JV has 15 players of its own. The three senior captains are Gage Hines who is a four year varsity player along with Archer Bergeron, and Jayden Bangs who are third year varsity players. Bangs was 2nd team all-conference last year. “They’ve been around, they know the program and can show the younger players the ropes,” said Giraudo. “They are high quality kids and will do a great job as captains.” The Indians have lost starting striker, Jonathan Colunga who was selected by the Timbers Academy recently to play with the U-16 team in Portland. Colunga who was 2nd team all-conference last year is the second Roseburg player ever to join the Timbers academy, joining Walter Reustle. “It’s a big loss for us, but we’re happy for him,” Giraudo said. “We couldn’t be more proud of him and this opportunity.” “We’ve improved quite a bit since last year, even with Colunga leaving. We’re expecting a playoff spot this year,” Giraudo said. “We have a group of players making the jump from JV to varsity that are greatly improved and will be able to jump into the varsity game with no problem.” Giraudo remembers the South Medford game last season on senior night that ended in a 2-1 loss, which cost them a chance at the playoffs. “It was our best game of the year, we just couldn’t finish,” Giraudo said. “Had we won that game, we would have ended up in second place in conference.” The Southwest Conference looks to be tough again this year as South Eugene returns as the favorite as they’ve won the league the past three seasons. South Medford is expected to be good this season while Grants Pass and Sheldon are going to be improved from last year according to Giraudo. The Indians lost Patrick Giuardo to graduation after he made 1st team all-conference a season ago. JT Dauterman made honorable mention and also graduated. Fernando Bitelli a Brazilian exchange student was 2nd team all-conference and transferred back home. The Indians will have seven home games all on Finlay Field.
