Man helped by local residents turns around minutes later and steals a 9 year olds bike

11:25 PM · Jul 2, 2019

Between 8-9am this morning, a man appeared to be passed out at a bus stop in the Hucrest neighborhood. A few neighbors went to the man and offered to help him when it was apparent that he had overdosed or had taken some concoction of drugs that had caused him to go on a bad trip. Paramedics were called and when they arrived the 30 year old man refused any services. The kind neighbors noticed he was improving with food and water so they went back and got more fruit and made him a sandwich. An hour later he was gone. But the Hucrest neighborhood has a very active neighborhood watch and a group of “Patrollers” that kind help keep an eye on incidents as they are unfolding in the neighborhood. The man was seen riding his bike between houses and through a field at Hucrest school. So Sebastian, one of the neighborhood patrollers went to Hucrest and noticed that the man had a brand new kids bike with him as he jumped a fence and continued to ride through the neighborhood in the direction of the patrollers house. So the Sebastian rode home and waited for the man to ride by his house. The man did not ride by the Sebastians house, but instead decided to ride up into his driveway! The situation did not go well for the man and after a scuffle, the small kids bike was taken away and the man was escorted by Sebastian out to Garden Valley. Less than 5 minutes later, a family in the neighborhood posted that someone just stole their 9 year olds bicycle from Hucrest and replaced it with an old beat up adults bike! The kids bike has been returned to the kid minutes later, a police report has been filed and the responding officer believes they know who the suspect is based upon the description. Shoutout first to the kind neighbors who attempted to help this man. No matter how often the help gets abused, we still need to have compassion for those that need help. Then, shoutout to Sebastian for keeping an eye on the situation, for recovering the bike and escorting the man out of the neighborhood. Also thanks to our Neighborhood Patrol Group and our Neighborhood Watch Group, as well as Roseburg Police for all your help. Great team effort!
