Monday Morning MP97 Fire Update: Fire Grows to 11,668 Acres, 10% Contained

3:09 PM · Jul 29, 2019

The milepost 97 fire grew a little over 650 acres over the past 24 hours and is now about 11,668 acres. With current wind and weather conditions it's predicted that this fire will continue to grow in size. The southern most tip of the fire is past milepost 90 and is getting close to milepost 89 along I-5. The fire now runs along almost 9 miles of I-5, in some areas right up next to the freeway. Weather today will be a bit cooler and more humid. Winds will not be as strong as previous days, though things could get a bit gusty in the afternoon. 3-9 mph winds from the north and northwest with gusts up to 13mph. There are a total of 1,044 firefighters assigned to the fire; 694 day shift and 350 night shift. Around midnight last night a firefighter was struck by rolling debris. The firefighter was evaluated and treated on scene and transported by air to Rogue Valley Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment. The firefighter was released this morning. It's encouraging that the growth of the fire slowed significantly over the past 24 hours. Let's all hope that continues. Big shoutout to the almost 1k personnel now working on putting this fire out!
