The Sutherlin girls basketball team won on the road at Newport 77-42 Friday night while the boys team lost at home to Newport 50-60.

The girls improved to 4-0 on the season. Micah Wicks had 29 points, 20 of which came in the second half for Sutherlin. Amy Dickover had 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Kiersten Haines also had 16 points including five 3-pointers. "We played really well in the first half, probably the best defensive effort we've had in the first half," Sutherlin coach Josh Grotting said. "We held them out of the paint, they only had 12 points, actually they hit four 3-pointers but we're still figuring things out and cleaned that up." The boys lost their first game of the season dropping them to 3-1 on the year. Mason Gill led Sutherlin with 19 points while Josh Davis added 11 points. "We came out very flat in the 3rd quarter and Newport capitalized on our mistakes. We just couldn't fight or way back in it." Sutherlin coach Craig Stinnett said. The Bulldogs host Creswell at home on Tuesday with the girls game starting at 5:30 p.m. and the boys tipping at 7 p.m. Kiersten Haines about to attempt a 3-pointer.
