Roseburg Wrestling Finishes 2nd at State, 2 Win State Titles
The Roseburg wrestling team took second place as a team in the 6A state championships Saturday but scored two individual state titles. The Indians streak of six straight team state titles came to end. Newberg won the state title with 310.5 points while Roseburg had 262.5 points. Mountain View came in third place with 209.5. "As a team we fell a little short on a lot of days leading up to the season and during in our training prior to," Roseburg coach Steve Lander said. "At the State tournament we fell a bit short. The two go hand in hand. Preparing to win is a lot more important than wanting to win." Roseburg had four total finalists, including two second place finishes. No. 3 seed Nash Singleton won the 120 pound state title with 10-3 decision over top seed Noah Worthington of Sprague. Darian Thacker who was the No. 1 seed also won a state title at 170 pounds, winning a 7-2 decision over the No. 2 seed Cannon Potts of Mountain View. "Nash and Darian have been outstanding all season." Lander said. "The work and focus that they have put into their preparation for the season was on point, their titles were well deserved." Kahleb Diaz (126) and Tristan David (152) also advanced to the Finals in their respective weight classes. No. 2 seed Diaz lost to top seed Ayden Garver of Newberg in a 10-4 decision. David who was the No. 6 seed lost a very close match to top seed Cael Brunson of West Linn in a 3-2 decision. "It's not easy to win a Championship, it's not easy trying to get 61, 14-18 year old's to put in consistent focused training," Lander added. "We needed to be a little better and couldn't do it this weekend." Newberg had 22 qualifiers in the state championships thanks to four additional wild cards they received from the OSAA.
