Roseburg Residency Announces Match With First 8 Residents
9:56 PM · Mar 26, 2020The Roseburg Family Medicine Residency received news on Monday, March 16 that they matched eight new residents into their program. They received the list of names on Friday, March 20 and made calls to the new residents to congratulate them. “I am very excited with our inaugural class of interns and genuinely believe we have a wonderful group of individuals, especially for this first cohort,” Residency Operations Director Desiree Inglis said. “They are from all over the US and come to us with different backgrounds, skillsets and life experiences. Dr. Taylor and I called, and spoke to each applicant and everyone is just as excited as we are to begin their residency training in Roseburg.” The process for picking residents includes a match and ranking process that means both the program and residents have selected each other as their top choice. “We are excited to welcome these talented doctors to Roseburg,” Residency Director Dr. Chip Taylor said. “This is a crucial step in our efforts to fortify the healthcare workforce in rural Oregon and improve access to high-quality health care in our community.” Residents will sign their contracts within the next week and then prepare for their move to Roseburg. They will report to orientation on June 15 and the residency officially begins July 1. The residency is a partnership between Aviva Health & CHI Mercy Health – Mercy Medical Center. Brian Eichman the Mercy residency project manager has worked for over six years helping to establish the program for the hospital aside from his other job with Centennial Medical Group. “To be a first year program and to fill all eight slots is quite an accomplishment,” Eichman said. “A lot of programs don’t fill all their slots, so that’s a big deal. These first residents set the culture as it’ll be a learning curve. It’ll be ever changing, making it better and they’ll be the leaders of it. You don’t just learn from the faculty you learn from the older residents so this group is a very important group. What this does, it changes the culture of our medical community here. It will change it to more of a learning environment. You have to be on your toes when you’re teaching others. That’s a positive for not only the patients but also the medical community. It’s prestigious when we recruit because you have a residency so it also helps recruit doctors.”
