UCC Adding Women's Soccer and Esports This Fall
Umpqua Community College will be adding both women's soccer and Esports to their athletic program this fall. The Esports team will be looking to play League of Legends, Rocket League, Super Smash Brothers and possibly FIFA, Madden and 2K. “We are currently configuring an arena and recruiting for a team,” UCC athletic director Craig Jackson said. “We’re hoping to carry at least 20 team members and are hoping to play a full schedule. We’re offering scholarships for high level players.” Esports has grown in popularity in recent years with professional leagues and prize money increasing all over the online gaming world. UCC will also be launching women’s soccer this fall. “We will be bringing in players and training for an exhibition season in 20-21,” Jackson said. “We will be playing a full NWAC schedule in 21-22. We are currently recruiting for a 22-24 person roster and that will be a scholarship program as well.” The women’s soccer program hasn’t announced a coach yet but will be soon according to Jackson. The exhibition season is likely to be played on the road as they travel to scrimmage against other teams. It’s unknown if UCC women’s soccer will have home games or a home field this fall. “These two programs were part of a multi-year phase to increase enrollment,” Jackson said. “We’re excited to add some new variety to our current line-up and give local students another reason to attend UCC.” UCC is still waiting to hear from the NWAC about fall sports competitions due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
