Rock Creek Road Fire Burns Tuesday Afternoon

(DFPA) Crews from the Douglas Forest Protective Association and North Douglas County Fire & EMS responded to a grass fire Tuesday afternoon, located four miles northeast of Drain off of Rock Creek Road. Firefighters arrived on the scene of the fire around 2:30 PM and reported a four-acre fire burning in a previously mowed field. Ground resources used a pump and roll tactic to stop the forward spread of the Rock Creek Road Fire before it could get established in the surrounding forested area. Pump and roll tactics are typically used during grass fires when the terrain allows the engine to be driven around the perimeter of the fire. When firefighters use pump and roll tactics, they drive into the already burned portion of the fire, also known as the black, at the heel of the fire. One to two firefighters will then walk alongside the engine with hoses, spraying water on the edge of the fire while the engine operator drives around the perimeter of the blaze. The Rock Creek Road Fire burned approximately six acres of grass before the fire spread was stopped. Firefighters remained on scene of the fire until 5:00 PM, mopping up hot spots and securing control lines. Fire crews were assisted on scene of the Rock Creek Road Fire by the landowner who brought a water trailer to support suppression efforts. The cause of the Rock Creek Road Fire is currently under investigation.
