Roseburg Public Schools Push Back Possible K-5 Reopening Until January 7th
Roseburg Public Schools just announced that reopening plans will be pushed back to a target date of January 7th, 2021. Here is the latest communication from today: Dear Roseburg Public Schools Families, We received the latest COVID-19 case count from the state today, and as expected, case numbers have unfortunately not decreased to levels that will allow us to reopen to in-person learning on December 7. The total number of cases over the past two weeks is 276 and the test positivity rate is 5.2%. The multi-week trend in Douglas County is as follows: 11/01/-11/14 - Cases per 100k - 208.46 -- % Testing Positive 5.6% 11/08/-11/21 - Cases per 100k - 293.98 -- % Testing Positive 6% 11/15/-11/28 - Cases per 100k - 276.17 -- % Testing Positive 5.2% This development requires us to again make the difficult decision to delay plans for the return to in-person learning for our elementary-age students. In consideration of the upcoming Winter Break, as well as an expected rise in case numbers in coming weeks, we have decided to push our target date for reopening to these grades to January 7, 2021. As a reminder, in order for students in all elementary grades to return to in-person learning, case numbers will need to fall below 100 cases per 100,000 people (50 to <100) over a combined two-week period. Test positivity rates will also remain a factor. You can view the latest Oregon Health Authority metrics and learn more about the requirements by clicking https://bit.ly/3eKTau9. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your student’s teacher if additional support is needed. Although we are not able to be together right now as a Roseburg school district family, please know that every single staff member, teacher and administrator cares deeply about our students. Please stay safe. Sincerely, Jared Cordon Roseburg Public School Superintendent"
