YMCA In Roseburg Receives Anonymous Donor Pledge To Match Up to $50,000

The YMCA of Douglas County is in the middle of a campaign to help raise funds to keep the Y open thanks to an anonymous donor pledging to match up to $50,000. The YMCA building has to remain closed during the current State freeze except for emergency childcare. Shelley Briggs-Loosely has been a volunteer board member at the YMCA since 1983 and is helping lead the effort to keep the YMCA open. “An anonymous family donated $50,000 to help keep the Y open, so it doesn't close were their words,” Briggs-Loosely said. “So, any gift that is given, is matched until the end of the year to meet that opportunity. That's the incentive for the call to action.” In order to give people can go to: https://operations.daxko.com/online/3133/onlinegiving/donation.mvc?campaign Or people can mail checks to: 1151 Northwest Stewart Parkway Roseburg, OR 97471. “Our membership has declined and that's the main source of our revenue,” Briggs-Loosely said. “We don't know what December will bring, with what members can pay. We're down with fewer staff working. We have raised $21,000 at the moment towards the match for the $50,000.” Some members have been able to continue to pay their membership fee even though they haven't been able to use the facility due to the closure. The YMCA is hosting some live outdoor classes, in an attempt to keep some programs going but it’s nothing close to their normal capacity. “People don't realize the Y needs help, we don't get government assistance and we apply for some grants but were membership driven,” Briggs-Loosely said. “We're grateful to those members who are able to keep continue to pay their membership. Briggs-Loosely said in a normal year, the YMCA does a campaign in the spring to help scholarship people to get free access to the Y. They dont turn anyone away for the inability to pay. “We've been pretty self-sufficient until now.” Briggs-Loosely said.
