Backside Brewing Opens Second Location In Sutherlin
The Backside Brewing Sutherlin Outpost is finally ready to open about a year after owner K.C. and Savannah Mckillip signed papers to expand their brand into Sutherlin. The new Backside location opened today at 105 West Central Street, Sutherlin OR 97479. The outpost will feature Backside’s brick oven pizza, beef, elk and bison burgers, along with chicken sandwiches and other pub style food like Hush Puppies. K.C. Mckillip built the brick oven himself along with remodeling the entire space to make it feel like the Backside brand. “We’re going to have all of our beer, will actually have more beer on tap there at the Outpost,” K.C. Mckillip said. “Will have other local Douglas county breweries beer on rotation to support local breweries. Along with mix drinks, wine, cider and a full bar.” Work is continuing on a big outdoor patio area that will be ready by this spring. “We had been tossing the idea around, the discussion around how are we going to grow, I’m pro-growth, because if were not growing then were getting comfortable and stagnant,” K.C. Mckillip said. “Expanding distribution is extremely difficulty. So, we said look at a second location. The owners (of the building) and the City of Sutherlin wanted to help us and get a brew pub in Sutherlin. After meeting them and looking at it we left saying we had to do this. The support, made it feel right.” Backside signed papers back in February of 2020, but then Covid-19 hit so it’s been an arduous process but Mckillip has continued working on the location. “People are constantly asking us, when are you opening,” K.C. Mckillip said. “People want to support us and are excited, so it’s pretty cool. That’s motivation to get it open. We’ve remodeled the whole thing we have built everything ourselves here at the Roseburg brewery. It’s been a ton of fun to build it.” While the pandemic has tapered Backside Brewing’s distribution because bars and restaurants are closed, their Roseburg location has continued to thrive. “Our staff has been awesome; they’ve been working so hard,” K.C. Mckillip said. “We’ve been crazy busy, I’m super blessed. What we lost in distribution we’ve got back in inside sales. The community has supported us tenfold and I’m thankful our county has stayed open.” Backside has 25 employees at their Roseburg location and plans on hiring 15 employees in Sutherlin. Hours for the Outpost will be Tuesday & Wednesday 11am-8pm, Thursday 11-9, Friday &Saturday 11-10pm, Sunday 11-8pm, Closed Mondays.
