Roseburg Boys Soccer Teams Have Home Openers Tonight At Finlay Field
The Roseburg boys soccer teams have their home openers tonight against Crater at Finlay Field. The Indians lost to Ashland 2-0 Tuesday night in their season opener. Ashland went to the OSAA 5A State semifinals in the 2019-20 season. The Crater game for JV will be broadcast online at 4 p.m. and the Varsity game at 6:30 p.m. “We haven’t played a game as a group in a year and half, so there was some rust that needed to be knocked off our game,” Roseburg coach Jim Giraudo said. “To the boys credit it took them only 20-30 minutes to adjust to the speed of the game against a physical Ashland team. It could have gone either way. Tyson Bustamante hit the underside of the post and it didn’t go in. It takes a game or two to make some personal or formation adjustments. Ashland played a season one fall season, where they got to play as a group for six or seven games.” The Indians have five seniors, seven juniors, one sophomore and two freshmen on the varsity team this year. Roseburg has eight returning starters from the 2019-20 season. “It’ll be a different kind of year, we had several players who would be varsity players that are not playing,” Giraudo said. “Others lost interest and found other sports to do. With no rankings or standings, it’s good enough to get out their together, running around, improving and doing something physical.” Roseburg is playing a nine-game schedule with teams they don’t typically get to play and they won’t be playing the Eugene based schools. “It’s fun to play some teams we don’t typically play,” Giraudo said. “Crater has really been improving the last two or three years. They made the playoffs last year. It’s going to be a tough battle tonight. In terms of this season being a steppingstone for next season which would presumably take place in the fall, Giraudo agreed. “We have 14 freshman on our JV team so we have a huge freshman class this year and that’s going to be massive moving forward,” Giraudo said. “After playing Ashland now we know what level of speed we have to be at, we practiced at the level this week. If we can consistently hit that goal in training, all the other games we should be fine.” Roseburg Varsity Roster: # Name Position Grade 1 Chris Giraudo GK 12 2 Paviat Rai M/F 11 3 Elijah Finlay M/F 9 4 Moses Finlay M/F 9 7 Jonathan Yun D/M 11 8 C James Dauterman M 12 9 Angel Flores M/F 10 10 Tyson Bustamante M/F 11 11 Charles Anderson M/F 11 12 Chahaya Hill M/F 12 15 Bryson Trenkle M 11 16 Logan Michael D/M 11 17 C Rayce Bergeron D 12 18 C Attreyu Pinard D 12 19 Trevor Knox D 11
