Corrugated Cardboard Recycling Returning to Transfer Sites July 1st
The Douglas County Board of Commissioners are excited to announce that they are bringing corrugated cardboard* recycling back to ALL Douglas County Transfer Stations, effective July 1, 2021. All nine of our Douglas County Transfer Stations (Camas Valley, Canyonville, Elkton, Glide, Glendale, Myrtle Creek, Oakland, Reedsport and Roseburg) will now accept clean and dry corrugated cardboard for recycling. Our Douglas County Public Works, Solid Waste Management Division have placed specially designed recycling bins at all of our Douglas County Transfer Stations for our residents to recycle corrugated cardboard free of charge. You will need to flatten your corrugated cardboard in order for it to fit in the new bins. The return of corrugated cardboard is the result of the continued efforts by Douglas County to find viable and cost-effective recycling alternatives, as well as source recycling partners and processing facilities willing to work with us to recycle materials. In January of this year, the Commissioners were able to bring glass recycling back to our transfer stations as a result of the innovative efforts of our Douglas County Public Works and Solid Waste Management team. The glass brought to our Transfer Stations is crushed and repurposed for leachate filtration, as an aggregate substitute, and also as foundation support at the Douglas County Landfill. In May of 2018, Douglas County, along with our recycling partners and numerous other manipulates nation-wide, had to curtail our recycling efforts due to the embargo China placed on their purchasing programs for recyclables with the United States. We are excited that we were able to find a recycling partner for cardboard that enabled us to bring back cardboard recycling in Douglas County, and we hope to continue to research more solutions to bring back additional recycling options in the future, like paper, other cardboard and plastics. While we do not have a timeline for the return of these recyclables, we are actively working on programs. As a reminder, we are still accepting tin and aluminum cans, scrap metal, oil and batteries recyclables for free at all of our transfer sites. Please check our Douglas County - Solid Waste Webpage for more information about our other recycling options and locations. We will need our residents help to recycle right, so we can continue to offer and bring back our recycling options. Please follow the instructions at the recycling centers, and only place items in bins that belong in that recycle bin. Make sure your recyclables are clean, unsoiled, free of debris, free of paper, free of staples and not placed in the recycle bins in plastic bags. Remember the right thing to do is to only put recyclables in the recycling containers and place all non-recyclable items into garbage containers. Douglas County, along with local and regional governments, waste disposal companies, processors and industry representatives continue to work together to find workable solutions to the recycling issues facing not only Douglas County, but cities all around the globe. *Corrugated cardboard is the thick cardboard that has the extra layer of wavy fiber in between sheets.
