Surge Continues, 56 Douglas County Residents Currently Hospitalized

7:57 PM · Aug 16, 2021

Today, it is with deep sorrow that we are reporting by far our youngest death of a Douglas County resident from the COVID-19 virus. The individual was only 27 years-old and far too young. We cannot even begin to express the unbelievable sadness felt or the incredible loss this and the other 103 deaths have had on our communities, their families and their friends. This is a sad reminder that the COVID virus does not differentiate or discriminate who it attacks. COVID does not care who you are, how old you are or what you believe. By far the biggest issue, is the fact that the spread of this virus is preventable. As your local Public Health Authority, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners, along with Dr. Bob Dannenhoffer, our Douglas County Public Health Officer continue to encourage our residents to be vigilant in practicing the best prevention measures to help stop the spread of this virus. These COVID prevention measures include; getting vaccinated; staying home if you are sick; washing your hands frequently and/or using hand sanitizer; cleaning frequently touched surfaces; keeping your distance from others in public; wearing face coverings where recommended; maintaining your health and wellness; limiting travel to COVID hot spots and minimizing contact with those not from your own household. By far the most effective measure in preventing the spread of COVID-19 are the vaccines. According to respected medical sources, the data overwhelmingly illustrates that the three widely available and safe COVID vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalizations and death. In fact, it currently shows that vaccines are 70-80% effective in preventing symptomatic disease, and over 90% effective in keeping you from being hospitalized or dying from COVID. To illustrate this point, 51 of the 56 residents currently hospitalized with COVID are not vaccinated.
