YMCA to Open Additional Childcare Location in Roseburg

The YMCA of Douglas County has secured a location in Roseburg to add much needed childcare spaces. Douglas County was already considered a childcare desert in Oregon before a recent announcement that the largest childcare in Douglas County would be closing September 30th and around 160 children would need to find a new source of childcare. After hearing the news of the closure, new YMCA CEO Cody Brockelmeyer, YMCA Board Chair Shelley Briggs Loosley and YMCA Childcare director Stacey Hanson scrambled to find additional childcare space to help the displaced children and families. Discussions and lots of hard work this past week have culminated in an agreement to utilize several rooms at Roseburg Alliance Church on Garden Valley Blvd. There will be 2 infant rooms available for children up to two years old and 3 preschool rooms available for children 3-5 years old. On top of quickly securing a location, the YMCA also found out this week there is a 70-day grace period for establishing new childcare locations in the State of Oregon. As long as enough childcare providers can be hired, there could be a seamless transition for families losing childcare at the end of the month. The YMCA plans to open the new location October 1st. The YMCA is now hiring Licensed Childcare Providers and Childcare aids, who do not need to be licensed. Salary for these positions with the YMCA were recently increased and are very competitive, Brockelmeyer said.
