Smoke from McKinney Fire NE of Yreka Blanketing Douglas County

7:41 PM · Jul 30, 2022

Lots of smoke in the skies over Douglas County today and it's coming from a new fire down in California, the McKinney Fire Northwest of Yreka. The McKinney fire started on Friday afternoon and exploded to 29,493 acres by Saturday afternoon. When the fire started, it was about 14 miles from Yreka but has been burning closer causing evacuations over a pretty large area down there. It's now 9 miles west of Yreka. There are cumulus clouds forming in the area across southern Oregon so it looks like there will be thunderstorms this weekend according to NWS in Medford. Definitely keep an eye on that. Smoke will be around for the next few days at least. Temperatures should drop a bit next week into the 80s which will be nice.
