Sunday Morning Fire Update: Several Fires Burning Up Near Diamond Lake

4:35 PM · Jul 31, 2022

Smoke is still showing up from the two fires burning up by Diamond Lake on Sunday morning. I'm not seeing aircraft on these two fires now so I believe it's just hand crews working them today after an initial air attack on them yesterday. A red flag warning is still in effect for a large portion of eastern Douglas County. Thunderstorms are likely to be seen again Sunday into Monday. Air quality in Roseburg is still good as of Sunday morning, but deteriorates the further you go east. You can monitor the air quality here: https://gispub.epa.gov/airnow/?contours=ozonepm&monitors=none&xmin=-14175705.517655635&xmax=-13254180.704649596&ymin=5173268.820976867&ymax=5521210.173730972 Update 1pm July 31 from Umpqua National Forest: "Suppression efforts are underway for the Windigo Fire, which began yesterday afternoon in the Windigo Pass area off Forest Service (FS) Road 60 on the Douglas and Klamath county divide. Ground and aviation resources responded quickly to the fire which is actively burning in timber. The fire remained active overnight and is now estimated to be greater than 100 acres. This number is expected to increase as information becomes available. Today’s efforts will focus on identifying and establishing primary containment line as part of the full suppression response to the fire. Firefighters are also responding to several reports of additional fires on the Forest including the smaller Forebay Fire, just north of the Lemolo 1 Forebay. Response capacity remains high with multiple resources staged and ready to engage with any new starts. Current resources include two water tenders, four engines, two crews and aircraft. Earlier today, a helicopter from the Windigo Fire detected a new fire burning a few miles north on Potter Mountain on the Willamette National Forest. Light to moderate smoke impacts are anticipated in the Windigo Fire area and from other new starts. A red flag warning is in effect for a significant portion of eastern and southern Oregon due to scattered thunderstorms and fire weather. This includes portions of the Umpqua National Forest. A closure for public safety is currently underway for a section of the Pacific Crest Trail (#2000) in the vicinity of the fire. Visitors are asked to avoid the general area, including FS Road 60, due to increased fire traffic. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Please help firefighters by being vigilant with fire prevention efforts." Update 2 pm: Appears there is a third and fourth fire as seen from the aircraft activity in the area and satellite imagery. Update 7 pm: “ Here is an update on the current fire situation on the Umpqua National Forest: There are three confirmed fires: Windigo Fire: Approximately 1,300 acres burning near Windigo Pass. A closure on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and Forest Service (FS) Road 60 is underway.
