Janelle Newton Takes the Helm as Roseburg High Girls Soccer Coach

9:08 PM · Mar 23, 2023

Janelle Newton, a former Oregon State University (OSU) soccer player, has been appointed as the new Roseburg High School (RHS) girls' soccer coach. Newton is taking over the position previously held by Kristin Parks, who stepped down after the 2022 season. Eager to share her passion for soccer with the local community, Newton aims to build a program that fosters growth, creates lasting memories, and develops strong bonds between teammates. Newton's athletic journey began at Milwaukie High School, where she played soccer, basketball, and track. Her dedication to soccer eventually led her to walk on to the OSU women's soccer team. Throughout her college career, she earned a scholarship, a starting role, and was voted one of the captains in her senior year. Newton and her husband, Joe, moved to Roseburg in 2009. Joe grew up in the area and went to school at Roseburg High School. He also played football at RHS, then Oregon State (where the couple met) as well as a short stint with the Seattle Seahawks. After arriving in Roseburg, Janelle coached soccer at Sutherlin High School until her own kids started playing soccer. Since then, she has now been coaching at Umpqua United (UUSC) for seven years. She has coached her oldest daughter's team, and all three of her children are now playing soccer locally for UUSC. Currently, Newton works at the Douglas ESD as the Safe Routes to School Facilitator, but next school year will be back in the classroom as a middle school teacher at Maple Corner Montessori. At a recent meeting, Newton expressed her excitement for the new chapter and emphasized the importance of hard work and commitment for the players and the program to fully realize their potential. “I told them it will be hard, but that it should be, and that's part of what makes it special. The best things in life require hard work and commitment.” Newton said. Her goals as a coach include creating a program and culture that players are proud to be a part of, helping them grow as athletes and individuals, and encouraging lasting memories and friendships. With spring and summer workouts on the horizon, Newton is working on the summer calendar for the team. As the first game approaches on August 26th, she remains both excited and slightly anxious but is eager to make a difference in the lives of her players. In closing, Newton expressed her gratitude to all who have supported the girls thus far, stating, "It truly takes a village." She looks forward to working with this talented group of young ladies and hopes to create a lasting impact on the RHS soccer program.
