Crater Lake Now Has 15 Foot Snowpack
5:38 PM · Apr 7, 2023Crater Lake has received an additional 14 inches of snow in the last 24 hours, raising the total snowpack at the National Park to 177 inches. This is 73 inches above the typical amount for this time of year. The road from Park Headquarters to Rim Village remains closed due to large amounts of snow and there is no estimate for reopening at this time, according to the NPS. As a result, the Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) for the Umpqua District now stands at 169% of the average. Around this time in 2022, the SWE was slightly above 50%. Diamond and Crater Lake are expected to receive another 2-4 inches of snow today before conditions begin to dry out starting Friday night and lasting through the weekend. Temperatures are also set to rise over the weekend before falling once more early next week, coinciding with the arrival of several days of additional moisture. However, starting next Wednesday, the weather appears to be turning drier and warmer, transitioning to more spring-like conditions.
