This is the Roseburg Duck Pond and Natural Area this morning, and what is taking place there is absolutely unacceptable. It’s become a place of encampments filled with drug use, mental health crisis, overdoses, vandalism, offensive littering, and domestic violence. This behavior cannot be tolerated at the entrance of our park system, the front door of our city, and one of the primary places for families to bring their children to experience nature and our local wildlife. At the moment, I do not recommend anyone walking through the nature trails at the Duck Pond unless you are confident you can defend yourself and protect anyone you are with. The City of Roseburg is currently recommending changes to public camping regulations, that among other things will make it illegal to camp anywhere near the Duck Pond Natural Area. I 100% support these changes. Though these changes will not solve the drug addiction and overdose crisis, mental health crisis, homeless issues, etc, they will reduce the amount of unnecessary impact on our children, community, parks, and natural areas.
