Chilcoot Fire North of Steamboat Grows to 981 Acres

Firefighters from the Umpqua National Forest are fighting multiple fires ignited by a recent lightning storm. A total of twelve fires have been reported, of which two are controlled, two are contained, and eight remain active. Due to limited resources and the significant impact of wildfire smoke on aviation, fires are being prioritized based on potential for growth and values at risk. Chilcoot Fire Location: Umpqua National Forest, Steamboat Creek and Canton Creek areas. Size: Estimated at 950 acres. Fire Behavior: Exhibited intense heat along its northern and southern boundaries. Resources: Two engines, two hand crew squads, one water tender, two falling modules, La Grande Hot Shots, two dozers, and miscellaneous overhead. A Type 2 Incident Management Team (California Team-12) will assume command on August 29, 2023, at 6:00 am. Agencies Involved: Umpqua National Forest, Douglas Forest Protective Association, and local landowners are collaborating closely. Aviation Resources: Ordered but impacted by wildfire smoke. Ridge Fire Location: Near the Bear Camp area, entered the Boulder Creek Wilderness. Size: Estimated at 150 acres. Resources: Two crews, two squads, overhead, and a Task Force Leader. A Type 2 Incident Management Team (California Team-12) will assume command on August 29, 2023, at 6:00 am. Other Notable Fires: Dinner Fire: 150 acres, located near Forest Service Road 17 and Forest Service Road 1746. Grizzly Fire: Between 50 and 200 acres, located near Grizzly Creek. Wyatt Fire: 30 acres, located near Noonday Ridge. Safety and Precautions No closures in the forest are in effect at this time. The public is advised to avoid active fire areas for their safety.
