Fire Crews Tackle Fires After Lightning Strikes

DFPA DISTRICT (09/05/25): The Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA) has been actively involved in lightning reconnaissance and initial attack following an early morning lightning storm on September 5, 2025. There were 48 lightning strikes recorded across lands protected by DFPA. Out of the 48 registered lightning strikes, DFPA crews have currently responded to 4 smoke investigations. Among these, two fires have been confirmed. Fate Creek Fire – Myrtle Creek, ORE Status: Initial attack in progress Size: Estimated 1.5 acres Location: Approximately 1 mile south of the 12000 block of South Myrtle Road Resources: 2 Type 3 engines, 2 Type 6 engines, 1 water tender, 1 dozer, Air Attack, Type 2 helicopter, 1 set of fallers, additional DFPA ground resources en route Threat to Structures or Homes: No Details: DFPA’s camera detection confirmed a column of smoke in the area. DFPA ground and air resources engaged in an aggressive initial attack. The forward progress of the fire has been knocked down. Firefighters have completed a hose lay around the perimeter. Aerial resources have been released. Ordered fallers have arrived and will begin assisting in containment. Deadman Fire – Myrtle Creek, ORE Status: Initial attack in progress Size: 1 lightning-struck tree Location: 19 miles east of Myrtle Creek, nearest to Deadman Creek Road DFPA Resources: 1 Type 6 engine Threat to Structures or Homes: No Details: A small column of smoke from a single-struck tree was located during DFPA’s aerial reconnaissance. The fire location borders lands protected by the Umpqua National Forest – Tiller Ranger District, and the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians’ land. Cow Creek Fire Management, Umpqua National Forest, and DFPA are engaged on this fire. Lightning reconnaissance will continue throughout the district. A detailed report on today’s findings, as well as a progress update on the mentioned fires and the Dads Creek Fire located in Glendale, Oregon, will be released later today. Via DFPA
