Firefighters Quell Grass Fire in Elkton, Public Safety Urged

7:51 PM · Jul 7, 2024

On Saturday, July 6, 2024, at approximately 10:25 PM, firefighters from the Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA), Elkton Rural Fire Protection District, Kellogg Rural Fire District, Scottsburg Rural Fire District, and North Douglas Fire & EMS responded to a reported natural cover fire in Elkton, OR, near milepost marker 32 on Highway 38, westbound. Upon arrival, firefighters found a quickly moving grass and brush fire climbing up a steep hillside. Crews were able to stop the fire's spread by 11:52 pm and had the 1.2-acre fire 100% hand trailed by 3:30 am. DFPA crews will remain on the scene mopping up until all heat and smoke are contained. No structures are threatened by this fire. The cause of this fire is human-caused and currently under investigation. We are asking the public to be aware of firefighters' presence along highways and to prioritize their safety. Their hard work and dedication are critical to keeping all of us safe. You can do the same by kindly slowing down, moving to a different lane, or completely stopping until the area is cleared to resume safe travel. Fire season is officially here throughout the state. We can get through this together and Keep Oregon Green by following public and industrial regulations that are in place for everyone’s safety. Know Before You Go and check what fire restrictions are in place for each district by visiting the ODF’s (Oregon Department of Forestry) website: https://www.oregon.gov/odf/fire/pages/restrictions.aspx For more information about public and industrial regulations in the Douglas District, visit our website at www.dfpa.net.
