Kids Learn to Fish at River Forks Park with Veterans, Volunteers, and River Experts

River Forks Park is buzzing with excitement today as students from Myrtle Creek take part in the Umpqua Fishery Enhancement Derby River Forks Kids Day, a hands-on fishing and river safety experience on the Umpqua River. The event runs June 3–5, 2025, bringing in different schools each day. Supported by $35,000 raised at the Umpqua Fishery Enhancement Derby, the program is a team effort by the UFED, Fly-Fishing Veterans, Oregon State Police, Umpqua Fishermen’s Association, ODFW, Douglas Timber Operators, and dedicated volunteers. Most of these kids have never fished or been on a boat. Today, they’re learning fly fishing, rod and reel casting, water safety, knot tying, and fish identification—rotating through stations led by pros and volunteers, including the DCSO Marine Patrol and ODFW. Every child goes home with their own life jacket, rod and reel, tackle box, and backpack, giving them the tools to keep enjoying the outdoors. It’s a day about more than catching fish—it’s about building confidence, connection, and a love for Oregon’s rivers. This opportunity wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of the local community, whose donations and support are helping create lifelong memories for these kids. Tomorrow, students from Oakland will join the fun, followed by Melrose Elementary on Thursday.
