Roseburg Schools Closed Monday Due to Severe Weather
Due to severe weather impacting our community, Roseburg Public Schools will be closed on Monday, March 17, as announced by Superintendent Jared Cordon. Below is his full message to families and staff regarding this decision and the district’s safety considerations. "Dear Roseburg families and staff, I appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. Our district teams spent the day assessing our schools and working with local authorities. To ensure the safety of our students, staff and families, we are closing school on Monday, March 17. All evening activities will also be canceled. My heart goes out to everyone feeling the impact of today’s weather. This weather system has been unusual and unpredictable, but I am grateful to see everyone coming together to support our friends, families and neighbors. Although our goal is to ensure all students have the opportunity to attend school, we are considering several safety concerns in our decision, including additional forecasted rain. Landslides and road damage may lead to unsafe driving conditions for students and staff, especially during the dark hours of the morning. In addition, we need to further inspect our buildings for potential damage. We will be assessing all of these concerns throughout the day Monday to ensure our students have a safe place to return on Tuesday. As a reminder, when severe weather is in the forecast, our district decides whether to delay or close school based on the following considerations: the ability to operate school buses safely the ability of students and parents to drive safely the ability of students to walk safely the ability of employees to get to work on time and safely Learn more at https://www.roseburg.k12.or.us/departments/transportation.
