Swift Watch and Live Music Returns to Fir Grove in September
10:50 PM · Aug 21, 2024Roseburg, OR – Join the Umpqua Valley Audubon Society for Swift Watch the first three Friday's in September at the Clay Place chimney in Fir Grove Park. Witness the amazing sight of Vaux’s Swifts gathering to roost at sunset during their fall migration. Gather on September 6, 13, and 20 in the parking lot of the Umpqua Valley Arts Center off Harvard Avenue. We’ll meet at 6:30 pm, with sunset around 7:50 pm early in the month and 7:20 pm by mid-month. The location offers ample parking, a lawn, play area, and restrooms. About Vaux’s Swifts: Vaux’s Swifts (pronounced “vawks”) are small birds that nest in Western North America and migrate to Central and South America. They roost communally in old chimneys during migration, creating a spectacular visual display. Umpqua Valley Audubon members will be present each Friday evening to share information about the Swifts and participate in a West Coast-wide data collection effort. This event is part of World Migratory Bird Day, with additional activities for kids and special guests, including rescued Cedar Waxwings. Weather permitting, enjoy live Americana music by “Swifts Sisters and Friends.” Bring your instruments and join in the fun!
