The Great-Blue Heron is native to Oregon and can also be found all across the United States. In Douglas County, you can find them at ponds, marshes, lakes and rivers. The Great-Blue Heron usually nests in trees. They build the nest out of sticks and they line the inside of the nest with leaves, pine needles, bits of shrubs, and other small twigs.

The Great-Blue Heron eats mostly fish, reptiles, amphibians, and other small mammals. One of the things I like about these birds is how stealthy they are and how they can stay really still and wait for their prey to come close enough to strike. A good place to look for herons in the winter is just past Kruse Farms here in Douglas County. And in the spring and summer, go to the duck pond next to Fred Meyer here in Roseburg and you will usually see them hunting in the ponds.

Douglas County Birds: Great-Blue Heron 

The Rufous Hummingbird is native to Oregon, and can often be seen throughout Douglas County in the summer at hummingbird feeders. They can also be found across the United States as well as throughout Canada and some parts of Alaska. 

Rufous Hummingbirds often build nests in trees, rose bushes and anywhere else they can find to anchor their nest. The female hummingbird builds the nest by herself and builds the nest out of bits of dead grass and other small bits of leaves. She will often take the fluffy seeds from cattail plants and line the inside of the nest with them. After that, she takes spider webs and wraps them around the nest to secure it. 

The Rufous Hummingbird is one of my favorites because of how cool they are, especially the males! Just because of how fast they are and how the male has that patch of red on its throat. Rufous Hummingbirds, both male and female have extremely good memories. They can remember where all of the feeders are that they visit.

Douglas County Birds: Rufous Hummingbird

Spotted Towhees can often be found in Douglas County at ground feeders. They are native throughout the western half of the United States. Spotted Towhees usually live in areas with lots of shrubs, thickets, and other plants. They build their nests on the ground or in blackberry bushes and other shrubs.

Before 1995, the Spotted Towhee used to be called the Rufous-Sided Towhee, but after 1995  they changed it to the Spotted Towhee. The Spotted Towhee is an Omnivore, which means that they eat mostly insects and seeds, including grasshoppers, crickets, caterpillars, moths, and other small seeds and insects. They can often be seen hopping around on the ground near bushes and thickets searching through the leaf litter for seeds and insects.
