Roseburg, Oregon - Roseburg's emerging live music scene continues to bloom with the arrival of The Rosebud Theatre, an intimate new music venue nestled in a historic downtown building at 663 SE Jackson Street. The Rosebud Theatre will launch its Grand Opening weekend with two dynamite performances that showcase the venue's commitment to exceptional musical experiences:

Friday, December 27: Polyrhythmics bringing their sound that originated in Seattle's underground deep funk scene combining impossibly tight grooves with bold brass and hypnotic percussion that showcased elements of R&B, progressive jazz, and Afrobeat which defined the instrumental group's early era sound. DJ Edge Lion will open and close the Polyrhythmics set, using the music of modern-day Africa, to invoke fun and love on the dance floor. 21+, doors at 7pm.

Saturday, December 28: Local legends TOB - That Other Band will deliver a soul-stirring performance with special guest Nathaniel Keller. Bringing in the R&B, Funk, Motown, and Soul genres, the band's music and grooves are infectious, the harmonies are powerful, and the band's vibe is captivating. Sitting still is not an option at a TOB show. All ages, doors at 6:30pm.

"The Rosebud Theatre represents another shift in the live music scene in our community," said the venue's founder, Kristi Rifenbark. Rosebud Theatre Set to Reopen in Downtown Roseburg December 27th

Going through Sutherlin yesterday or today, there was a big commotion at Central Park as a giant metal frame draped in blue and white fabric went up with the help of a team of people on the ground and tractors.

The new structure is Sutherlin's own half shell concert stage ready for the summer concert series that starts tomorrow. Music Off Central's secretary Debbie Hamilton said she is excited to see the concert series go big.

"I was almost in tears this afternoon," Hamilton said. "We have much bigger bands than we've had in the past. It was mostly local bands. We probably had maybe max 200 people. We never had any food trucks until last year. We decided with this fabulous half shell and stage to go bigger."

Sutherlin has had a summer music in the park concert series since 2008, but is going bigger this year. With help from American Rescue Plan Act funds, the City of Sutherlin purchased the fabric band shell that can go up and down as needed, laid a concrete stage, and has landscaping set to go in tomorrow. Hamilton said city staff worked very hard to make this happen, despite weather and shipping delays.

"It's been waiting for the weather to do the stage area part then the half shell came from Canada - the only place near the United States we could get one," Hamilton said. "It came in Thursday. Nothing like waiting until the last minute," Hamilton joked.

There will be food trucks and cotton candy in addition to the band playing in the park where families can utilize the park, playground, and splashpad.

"We're making it a family affair," Hamilton said. "We're super excited. Come, have fun, bring your kids. We're just ready to bring our community back together - enjoy everybody, enjoy the music."

The food trucks will be ready to serve at 5:30 p.m., there will be a small ribbon cutting ceremony at about 6:15 p.m., and the concert will start at 6:30 p.m. at Central Park. The band for tomorrow night will be The Koz from Eugene playing 70's to 90's classic rock.

Music Off Central Holds First Concert in New Half Shell

Music on the Half Shell is kicking off the 30th season of the free concert series with Pink Martini, a classic for the half shell. The show will start at 7 p.m. in front of the Nichols Band Shell in Stewart Park.

The Music on the Half Shell nonprofit brings quality artists who would normally perform at distant venues for a substantial admission fee to Roseburg every Tuesday night through the summer. It gives people an opportunity to listen to music, socialize, eat dinner on the lawn and experience the community.

Pink Martini is a Portland-based orchestra that first played in Roseburg in the summer of 1999. The cosmopolitan band has songs in 25 languages and plays all over the world, representing an America that welcomes newcomers and celebrates our differences. Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world, the band crosses genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop.

Blankets may be set out the morning of the concert to save a spot. Attendees still must follow park rules plus a few extra in the concert area for the special event: No dogs or other animals, except guide dogs, after noon; skates, skateboards, rollerblades and bicycles are not to be ridden after 5 p.m.; no amplified music or excessive noise; no fireworks; alcohol may not exceed 12% by volume; smoking is not allowed anywhere in the park; no patron may prevent others from enjoying the concert to its fullest; security officers may remove patrons from the concert when it is deemed that they are unwilling to abide by the regulations and/or when their actions are unlawful or pose potential harm to themselves or others; use of photographic or recording equipment is prohibited - If in use, the equipment may be confiscated.

The concerts cost the nonprofit an average of $20,000 to put on to the public for no-cost. The group estimates about 50,000 people attend each season.

Pink Martini Launches 2022 Season of Music On The Half Shell

This weekend is the second annual Hispanic Heritage Night in Douglas County, celebrating the values, culture and language of Latin American countries. The celebration will be on Saturday starting at 3 p.m. at 2001 W Bertha Avenue in Roseburg.

Event Director Julia Masner said giving the Hispanic community a safe place to share their heritage was a need she and her event partners recognized in 2019. The first event was a small occasion in February 2020.

“We created this event where we’re exposing Douglas County to ballet folklorico which is a traditional Mexican dance, we have a Mariachi band coming down from Eugence, we have a person who does rope tricks he’s called a Charro,” Masner said. “We’re hoping the community engages and has some fun!”

Over 6,500 people in Douglas County have Hispanic or Latino roots, the highest proportion after Caucasians, according to the 2020 Census. Masner is Hispanic and is excited to share the history she inherited with the community.

“This time, we have a little bit more, we grew a little bit more," Masner said. “We started seeing this growth in the Hispanic community, it was growing really quickly. Douglas County has never really had an event where they had exposure to the Latino Culture.”

There are more Spanish speakers than English speakers in the Americas. Approximately 416 million people speak Spanish between the tip of Alaska to the tip of Chile, compared to 334 million English speakers, according to Babbel.

The event is free to the public, family-friendly and dinner will be provided. The first half will be outdoors and the second half will move into the church for music and dancing. It is put on with help from Mano Amiga, Thrive Umpqua, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and The Ford Family Foundation.

This event is dominated by Mexican traditions, but it will showcase memorabilia from other parts of Latin America, like pictures, flags, and artwork.

"We want to be able to showcase all of Latin America, not just Mexico," Masner said.

Masner said the event will likely morph into an international night to celebrate more of the cultures represented in Douglas County in the future.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage

The annual Peace at Home competition fundraiser is adding a vocal competition this year. There will be seven dance teams and seven vocalists competing for bragging rights and raising money to support the center.

Organizer and center Executive Director Melanie Prummer said they have had vocalists perform before, but this is the most they have had and the first time it’s been judged to the same level as the dancing.

“We have judges who have dance experience, we have judges who have vocal experience, and we have judges who have both,” Prummer said. “It’s all about fun for us. There’s lots of talent in the community and we want talented folks to be able to give to Peace at Home and this is another way people can do that. We’d love to see it continue to grow.”

There are four events where the community can support the center and its mission to help people who are in or have experienced domestic violence or related traumas. 

The first event is happening on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 3 p.m. at the Winston Community Center. Tickets for the casual rehearsal are on sale, but may sell out. The youngest performers will only perform at this event.

The preview nights will be on Feb. 17 for the vocalists and Feb. 18 for the dance teams both at Sunnyside Theater in Downtown Roseburg. These nights will both be in-person events.

The final competition will be a virtual show held on Feb. 19 with all seven dance teams and all seven vocalists.

“The dance performances are really focused on empowerment,” Prummer said. “It really came from the coaches and their inspiration for the event. The coaches were talking to me about what inspires them about Peace at Home. It feels like we’re coming full circle.”
