Jordan Humphreys is the new Roseburg coach taking over for longtime coach Mike Pardon. The Indians went 15-11 last year and made it to the first round of the 6A state playoffs where they lost to Tigard 72-58. Roseburg lost seven seniors from last year’s team including Colin Warmouth who took second team all-state and broke the all-time scoring record at Roseburg. “The loss of Colin Warmouth will be a big hole to fill and we will try to do it by committee,” Humphreys said. “Scoring will have to be shared across the team. We hope to take advantage of our size through increasing the tempo of the game and being tenacious on defense.” The Indians have seven juniors and three sophomores on the team with only three varsity returners who saw limited time last year. “Our expectations for the season are to improve every single day,” Humphreys said. “As we lack experience it will be important that we build after every practice and every game so that we are peaking at the end of the year.” Jacob Parker, Matthew Parker, Zach Martin, Carsin Six and Attreyu Pinard are expected to be the starters come Wednesday night when the Indians kick off the season at home against Eagle Point at 6:45 p.m. “My hope in picking up where the program left off is to create some excitement around basketball in the youth programs and provide opportunities for younger kids to be successful,” Humphreys said. “I have a passion for basketball and want to give kids the opportunity to experience that for themselves.” Humphreys won a state championship at Oakland high school as the starting point guard in 2000. He also was an assistant coach at Oakland in 2006 and 2013 when they won state titles. Humphreys was the starting point guard on the 2000 championship team that went 30-0 his junior year. The next season Oakland set the state record winning 56 consecutive games between the 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 seasons. With Humphreys as their starting point guard Oakland went 59-1. He was Oakland’s JV coach from 2010-2017 and an assistant varsity coach the last two years in Washington. “He had a hand in all of our championships.” Oakland coach Jeff Clark said. “Jordan is the right guy for the job, he’s extremely intense, passionate, and knows it’s about the big picture,” Clark said. “Like how to develop the program and develop kids on and off the court. He has that passion and desire to win, a great guy to lead a program. Mike Pardon left some big shoes to fill but I know Jordan has a lot of energy and is developing the youth program. It’s a tough job and I think he’s the right guy to take it over.”
