Douglas County Birds: Spotted Towhee
Spotted Towhees can often be found in Douglas County at ground feeders. They are native throughout the western half of the United States. Spotted Towhees usually live in areas with lots of shrubs, thickets, and other plants. They build their nests on the ground or in blackberry bushes and other shrubs. Before 1995, the Spotted Towhee used to be called the Rufous-Sided Towhee, but after 1995 they changed it to the Spotted Towhee. The Spotted Towhee is an Omnivore, which means that they eat mostly insects and seeds, including grasshoppers, crickets, caterpillars, moths, and other small seeds and insects. They can often be seen hopping around on the ground near bushes and thickets searching through the leaf litter for seeds and insects.
