Douglas County Birds: Red-Shouldered Hawk
The Red-Shouldered Hawk is native to Oregon. In Douglas County you can often see Red-Shouldered Hawks perched in trees overlooking ponds and fields. They can also be found all throughout the United States. Red-Shouldered Hawks like to build their nests in large oak trees. They reuse their nests every year. They build their nest out of mostly sticks but line the inside of the nest with bits of bark and leaves. Red-Shouldered Hawks eat mostly mice, snakes, lizards, and other small rodents and amphibians. This Hawk is one of my favorite raptors! It's a really cool bird to watch, and I love the colors on its chest and under the wings.
