1:11 AM · Feb 4, 2023

Here is a collection of family-friendly events going into the weekend and next week. Saturday, Feb. 4 Friends of the Umpqua Hiking Club will meet at Northeast Parking Lot, Douglas County Courthouse at 8 a.m. for a hike at The South Slough. The hike is in the reserve with the rather unwieldy official name of South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. While the hike is not overly long, it does provide an exploration of a lush coastal forest, Rhodes Marsh, and of course, Coos Bay's South Slough. Driving time: 2 hours. Difficulty level: Moderate. Distance: 4.3 miles. Elevation gain: 300 feet. For more information call or text Rheo at 541-643-0727. Bring water, lunch, and appropriate clothing for hiking. If you are riding with somebody, be prepared to share gas expenses with your driver. At 9 a.m., in Stewart Park’s large pavilion, Roseburg Parks and Recreation staff will host the kick-off event for the Discover Roseburg 12 Land of Umpqua Geocache Series -- a free, family-friendly event. Parks and Rec staff will give out verbal instructions and coordinate-containing “passports” for a high-tech geocaching treasure hunt. Bring a smartphone or other device equipped with a Global Positioning System, or satellite-based radio navigation system, so you can hunt for 5 real-world geocaches, plus 15 virtual geocaches at special locations. Find all 20, to redeem your passport for a limited-edition collector’s geocoin honoring Roseburg’s sesquicentennial.
