5:11 AM · Jan 9, 2020

The second ranked Roseburg wrestling team battled to a 38-38 loss against Thurston Wednesday night at home as the Colts had one more technical fall than the Indians which happened to be the tiebreaker. Both teams had seven wins and five pins so the tiebreaker fell to the technical fall. Thurston who is ranked fourth in the 5A OSAAtoday coaches poll, jumped out to a 17-0 lead after the first three matches. Nash Singleton ended that run with a pin at 126 pounds to make it 6-17. “In a good dual meet you got to save bonus points and both teams did a good job getting them, but neither did a good job preventing them,” Roseburg coach Steve Lander said. “We needed to lose a couple decisions or even major decisions to save some points.” Kahleb Diaz (132) won a 15-3 major decision to make it 10-17. Archer Bergeron (145) later won a 9-0 major decision to make it 14-23. Then with the Indians trailing 20-26, Darian Thacker 170, Rourke Martin 182 and Rogan Coffman 195 all pinned their opponents in a row to make it 38-26. “We did a great job with the three pins in a row, Darian’s win was a great win,” Lander said. “I think that was state runner up last year so to a pin a guy that good is awesome.” Thurston had to pin their two remaining matches which they did, even though Tyler Estes and Hunter Blix both battled in those matches for Roseburg. “We had control of both the last two matches and just made mistakes so we need to learn about it and be better for sure.” Lander said. Kolton Malone had Thurston’s lone technical fall 1-16 3:41 at 120 pounds. Roseburg wrestles at 5A Crook County who is ranked second in the 5A coaches poll on Saturday.
