Sutherlin Girls Basketball Advances To State Quarterfinals

The No. 2 Sutherlin girls’ basketball team beat Portland Adventist Academy 49-32 Friday at the Dog Pound in the first round of the 3A state playoff. “Kiersten Haines led us with 16 points, she had three 3-pointers in the first quarter,” Sutherlin coach Josh Grotting said. “More than anything our three seniors Abigail Masterfield, Carmen Ganger and Kiersten did a good job for us staying aggressive.” Sutherlin led 30-16 at halftime. It had been two weeks since the Bulldogs (23-2) had last played in the Far West League finale on February 14. “We honestly didn’t play well, it was an ugly game,” Grotting said. “But this time of year will take a win, get back to practice and get better for next Thursday.” Sutherlin will play the winner of No. 10 Vale and No. 7 Oregon Episcopal School in the quarterfinal next Thursday at 8:15 p.m. at North Bend high school.
