Sutherlin Girls Beat Vale In OT Thriller, Onto Semifinals

The second ranked Sutherlin girls basketball team overcame an eight point fourth quarter deficit to force overtime and defeated Vale 66-57 in the 3A quarterfinals Thursday night at North Bend high school. The Bulldogs (24-2) trailed 39-47 in the fourth quarter but went on an 11-3 run to push the game into overtime. “As far as the game I was just really happy with our effort and resiliency,” Sutherlin coach Josh Grotting said. “The girls played through a lot of adversity and made big plays when they needed to.” Jadyn Vermillion had a game high 29 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Sutherlin. Vermillion had eight points in overtime. Paige Bailey added 13 points and eight rebounds. Starting center Amy Dickover fouled out with about five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter while starting guard Micah Wicks fouled out with 2:59 remaining in the fourth. Sutherlin outscored Vale 16-7 in the overtime period to advance to the state semifinals where they will face sixth ranked Burns today at 3:15 p.m. at Marshfield high school. “As for today we face another very well coached team that is physical and is going to be tough match up.” Grotting said.
