Sutherlin Wins Again, Plays For State Championship Tomorrow
The Sutherlin girls basketball team advanced to the OSAA 3A State Championship Friday defeating Burns 45-36 in the semifinal at Marshfield high school. The Bulldogs (25-2) will face top ranked Clatskanie, the defending state champion who beat Sutherlin 69-65 in overtime back on January 20 in a non-league game held at a neutral site. The championship game is Saturday at 5:45 p.m. at Marshfield high school. “Proud of the girls,” Sutherlin coach Josh Grotting said. “They’ve worked really hard to get here and to have a shot at the title is all you can ask for this time of year.” Amy Dickover led the Bulldogs with 14 points and added five rebounds. Kiersten Haines added 12 points while Paige Bailey had seven points and five steals. Jadyn Vermillion had seven points and five assists. "Its super cool and a great opportunity that we are all very excited to get the chance to be apart of and hopefully get redemption against Clatskanie." Amy Dickover said. Sutherlin led 13-6 after the first quarter and led 17-10 at halftime. The Bulldogs led 34-22 after the third quarter. Sutherlin is looking for its fifth championship in the last seven seasons as they won four consecutive 4A titles from 2014 to 2017.
