Sutherlin Falls In State Final To Clatskanie 51-40
The Sutherlin Bulldogs girls basketball team came up just short in their bid for a 3A state championship, losing to Clatskanie 51-40 Saturday in the Final at Marshfield high school. With the win Clatskanie repeated as state champions in back to back seasons. The game was tied 11-11 after the first quarter. But the Tigers (23-2) took over in the second quarter as they outscored the Bulldogs 20-7 to take a 31-18 halftime lead. The Bulldogs (25-3) were able to cut the Tigers lead to 40-31 at the end of the third quarter but weren’t able to complete the comeback. Kiersten Haines had 19 points to lead Sutherlin. Amy Dickover had six points and 14 rebounds while Micah Wicks had eight points and three assists. Jadyn Vermillion had seven points. Clatskanie held the Bulldogs to 9-36 (25%) shooting on the game. Sutherlin won the Far West League with a perfect 10-0 league season and won three tournaments throughout the year. Losing twice to Clatskanie and once to 4A Philomath.
