9:44 PM · Aug 11, 2020

Gathering Grounds Coffee House is one of the first businesses in downtown Roseburg to be approved for a Business Right-of-Way Permits to allow more outdoor seating in nearby street parking spaces. The coffee shop was approved at the end of last week by the City of Roseburg who created the program to allow businesses to utilize public, on-street parking spaces to accommodate outdoor seating and shopping areas. “We’re hoping it helps with more people feeling comfortable dining,” Co-owner Felicia Mellor said. “It will take our seating (with 6 feet restrictions) to 26 including the outdoor area. We’re hoping that people who didn’t realize we’re a downtown option will see and come check us out.” Mellor who owns Gathering Grounds with her mom, Peggy Cheatham opened the coffee shop in August of 2018. “Today is our first day with the parklet. The permit which was free goes until October 30, 2020,” Mellor said. “Overall business is down but we’re thankful that our community is rallying and thinking outside the box to allow cool things like this to help promote and support the local businesses.” Businesses, who are interested in participating in this program, are encouraged to apply with the city for a Business Use of Right-of-Way Permit. “We know that the past few months have been hard on businesses due to COVID-19,” City of Roseburg Communications Specialist Eric Johnson said. “This program, along with several other options that we are considering in the future, will provide a much needed economic boost to business owners, particularly the restaurant and retail industry.” There is no fee to apply and the review process is streamlined so that businesses can start utilizing their space as soon as possible.
