Up the North Umpqua River this afternoon a short distance from the smoke and destruction, there is still life. Tonight we got the somber news that 109 homes had been lost. We grieve with the families that just lost so much, so quickly. 

To all of you who lost your homes and possessions, I'm so sorry for all that you've lost. I'm also grateful you are still with us. That's what matters most. 

I'm also grateful you are in such a supportive community that will see you through this difficult time. I hope each one of you has felt the love and compassion that has poured out since the fire started.
