2:05 AM · Mar 25, 2021The UVC boys soccer team beat Sutherlin 4-3 in comeback fashion at Fir Grove Field in Roseburg on Wednesday. Ty Clement scored once and Andrew Munsey scored twice for the Bulldogs (3-3) as they led 3-1 at halftime. But UVC (4-0-1)) would go on to score three goals in the second half to take the win and hold on to a tie for first place in Special District 4 with Brookings-Harbor. UVC was led by Koby Sewall who had two goals including the game winning goal that made the score 4-3 in the Monarchs favor. Trenton Witt scored on an assist from Joe Buechley and Judah McAfee scored on an assist from Sam Guastaferro for UVC. “Down 3 guys due to sickness,” UVC coach Chris Guastaferro said. “We had never run a three-man defense and they took advantage of that. They were up 3-1, we made some adjustments, we played much more of an attacking transition game that wore down their defense and we were able to come back and score three goals in the second half. I’m just hoping we can stay healthy.” UVC had 11 shots on goal and goalie Nathan York had two saves for the Monarchs. “I thought we played great,” Sutherlin assistant coach Rick Murphy said. “It was the first time back to 11 verse 11, due to Covid protocol. Overall our kids played great. We ran out of gas, Chris is a great coach. They did a great job getting the ball to their outside midfielder and we ran out of gas chasing them. We get to play them again Saturday and will see what happens.” UVC plays Coquille (4-2) at 4 p.m. Thursday at Fir Grove Field in Roseburg. 1A/2A/3A Special District 4 will end up sending the top two placers into a state tournament after the end of the regular season.
