Sable Drive Fire

Crews from the Douglas Forest Protective Association and Douglas County Fire District No.2 responded to a grass fire Monday afternoon that was located approximately six miles northeast of Roseburg, near Sable Drive. Firefighters arrived on scene of the Sable Drive Fire around 3:20 PM and reported a slow-moving grass fire that was burning between Sable Drive and the North Umpqua River. The Sable Drive Fire consumed about an acre and a half of grass and brush before firefighters contained the blaze. Crews remained on scene of the fire for about two hours, mopping up hot spots and securing control lines. A preliminary fire investigation indicated that the Sable Drive Fire resulted from a rekindled debris pile that was not fully extinguished. Fire officials with DFPA and local fire departments urge anyone who burned debris over the winter or spring months to recheck the burned area to ensure that the pile was completely extinguished. If not fully extinguished, debris piles can smolder for weeks or even months before rekindling on a warm, windy day. In addition, fire officials remind that the responsible party who burned the debris pile can be cited for allowing the fire to rekindle and escape containment, in addition to being held liable for fire suppression costs and associated damages that result from the fire.
