Fire Crews Quickly Contain Milepost 9 Fire Along Hwy 138 West

On Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at approximately 12:00 pm, crews from the Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA), Kellogg Rural Fire District, Oakland Rural Fire District, Elkton Rural Fire Protection District, and Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) responded to a confirmed 1.2-acre fire located near Milepost 9 on HWY 138W in Kellogg, ORE. To protect the safety of the public and responding firefighters, thru traffic on HWY 138W, near milepost 9 was stopped by ODOT around 12:45 pm. DFPA responded with an aggressive initial attack, that included 3- Type 6 engines, a Type 3 engine, 2- 5 person squads, 2 helicopters, 1- fixed wing airplane and a dozer. Responding firefighters had the forward spread of both the left and right side of the highway, knocked down quickly. By 2 pm, the fire was 100% trailed and by 2:45 pm, 25% of mop-up was complete and the highway was opened again. Crews on scene will continue mop-up until the incident is 100% cleared and contained. The fire is human-caused, vehicle related and currently under investigation. Via DFPA Release ——————————————— Update from DFPA at 2:26pm: Fire is 100% trailed. Crews have began mop up. Human caused- under investigation. Update from DFPA 1pm: fire is at 2 acres and forward progress has been stopped!  A fire has started out on Highway 138 west around Milepost 9. It's apparently on the Kellogs Spring Camp property. DFPA has an initial estimate is the fire is about 3-4 acres. Please avoid the area if at all possible. More updates coming soon.
