Roseburg Fall Swift Watch Moving to Douglas County Courthouse

12:15 AM · Aug 31, 2022

The large number of swifts normally seen at the Clay Place chimney in Fir Grove are now being seen going into the chimney of the Douglas County Courthouse. On Monday night for example there were over 1,400 swifts that went down the Courthouse chimney. This has caused a last minute change in location for the annual Roseburg Fall Swift Watch put on by the Umpqua Valley Audubon Society. Here is today's statement from Umpqua Valley Audubon Society: "The swift migration has begun, but the swifts are currently roosting nightly in a chimney at the Douglas County Courthouse in the Roseburg city center and not at the usual Clay Place chimney in Fir Grove Park. The swifts may resume use of the Clay Place chimney when the weather cools, or not. We go where the swifts go, so Swift Watch Friday, September 2 will begin around 7 pm in the courtyard between the Douglas County Courthouse and the Justice Building." I'll update here if there is any further changes or movements of the Swifts.
