Days Creek (15-2, 6-0) defeated Country Christian 17-25, 25-23, 15-8 in three sets to start the day. The Wolves then beat North Douglas 25-16, 25-20 to set up the championship against Perrydale. No. 3 ranked Days Creek won the championship match in four sets over No. 5 Perrydale. Set scores were 25-17, 27-25, 25-19, 29-27. Ashtyn Slater made the all-tournament team along with Moriah Michaels for Days Creek. In the final game Michaels had 12 kills and 17 digs while Slater had 12 kills and 31 digs. “It was a good tournament to be in. We were kind of sluggish to start so it took us a while to get rolling,” Days Creek coach Gloria Kruzic said. “The last game against Perrydale, they’re a scrappy team. The rallies were really long, everyone was exhausted. It was nice to persevere through that. We’ve been talking about mental toughness and grit and pushing through.” Days Creek has started off Skyline League play 6-0 and is 15-2 overall winning 12 out of their last 13 matches. The Wolves last loss came in the championship match in the St. Paul tournament on September 21 against Portland Christian. Days Creek coach Gloria Kruzic pointed to the foundation that Ron Dunn created in his 30+ years of coaching at Days Creek. Kruzic who took over for Dunn this season as head coach, was an assistant for the last 14 years. Dunn coached Kruzic when she attended Days Creek high school along with assistant coach Rachel Matchette. “I’m very happy with how the girls are performing. Ron Dunn was here a long time and it’s kind of tough to coach without him,” Kruzic said. “He’s definitely the rock behind the program. We miss him a ton, the intensity of the coaching has helped make Days Creek what it is. He focused on integrity, teamwork, staying together as a team and being good people, students and athletes. Putting others first. Through that you gain success.” Days Creek resumes Skyline League North play against Elkton (8-2, 7-1) on Tuesday in a matchup two of the top teams in the conference.
