The Sutherlin boys soccer team lost 6-0 to St Mary’s of Medford on Wednesday night in the first round of the 3A state playoffs to end their season.
4:14 AM · Nov 7, 2019The Bulldogs finished the season 10-6 overall while going 10-4 in Special District 4 to take third place in league. “St. Mary’s is a very talented team,” Sutherlin assistant coach Rich Murphy said. “They were much bigger and faster than us and there first touch was very good. We gave up two quick goals and I think kids were shocked. It took us about 20 minute to settle down. I thought we played a pretty good second half. They scored their sixth goal with all of our subs on the field.” Sutherlin returned to the playoffs for the first time in eight or nine years according to Murphy. “Overall we had a great season,” Murphy said. “You can’t complain anytime you get to go state. I think the kids can learn a lot from playing a team like that. We’ve talked all year about trying to play the ball fast with a quick touch and we saw that today. We lose three seniors, so if we get everybody else back were going to be in another position to make a good run at the state playoffs.”
