The Umpqua Valley Christian boys soccer team lost to Brookings-Harbor 2-0 Thursday night on the road in a Special District 4 matchup.
4:39 AM · Oct 11, 2019The Monarchs (8-2, 7-2) had won six matches in a row coming into the game against the undefeated Bruins (9-0). The 1A Monarchs only other loss was a 5-1 defeat to the Bruins on September 17. The 3A Bruins scored in the 60th minute on a goal from Josh Serna. Kallen Christensen added on another goal for the Bruins in the 71st minute. Brookings-Harbor is a 4A school but is considered 3A under the OSAA due to a geographical grievance. “We held them to 0-0 at halftime. We were starting to wear them down but they‘re a very strong team,” UVC coach Chris Guastaferro said. “Their rate of possession was much higher than us. We stuck to our plan but we got worn down.” UVC had five shots on goal and 14 saves. Brookings-Harbor had 26 shots on goal. “Their goals didn’t change our composure, they kept playing strong,” Guastaferro said. “I’m proud of the guys for giving everything they got. They wanted to leave everything on the field and they did. We had some tremendous scoring opportunities but didn’t convert any.” The No. 5 ranked Monarchs still sit in second place in the Special District 4 along with Sutherlin (7-3, 7-2). UVC plays at Gold Beach on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
